Returning music to Australian TV – what should it look like?

It’s something that’s been discussed around tables in pubs, in homes and online for many years: the lack of music on Australian TV.

For a long time, you could barely turn the box on, particularly on weekends, without seeing artists performing (or miming in less-enlightened times) on either dedicated music shows or on some sort of variety show. It’s hard to believe now but before Australian free-to-air TV became predominantly the home of averages joes cooking, renovating or trying to become an overnight singing sensation (and the endless repeats of these shows), there were actually programs that gave local acts an opportunity to be seen and heard by more than just dedicated music fans. Unbelievable, I know.

During their recent week of features discussing the best and worst of pop culture from twenty years ago, The A.V. Club said that 1997 is a “frequent contender” for the title of Worst Music Year.
